Roundtable on “Unlocking Geothermal Opportunities in India and Global Markets”

The Consulate General of India, Houston, in partnership with the US India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) and Project InnerSpace, convened a closed door roundtable titled “Unlocking Geothermal Opportunities in India and Global Markets.” The discussion brought together leading experts from Houston’s energy ecosystem, research institutions, and industry to explore collaborative pathways for advancing geothermal development in India.

2.                In his opening remarks, Hon’ble Consul General Shri D.C. Manjunath underscored India’s rapidly growing energy needs and its commitment to achieving 500 GW of non fossil fuel capacity by 2030 and net zero emissions by 2070. He highlighted geothermal energy as a promising complementary clean energy source and emphasized Houston’s global leadership in drilling, subsurface engineering, and oilfield services as a strong foundation for India–US cooperation.

3.            Mr. Drew Nelson, Executive Director of Project InnerSpace, presented detailed insights on next generation geothermal technologies, geological mapping, and financing strategies. He also shared a special report titled “The Future of Geothermal in India”, outlining how advanced geothermal systems could support electricity generation, data centre cooling, industrial processes, and other direct use applications in India.

4.           The session was moderated by Mr. Siddharth Aryan, Senior Director – Energy and Infrastructure, USISPF, who guided discussions on technology transfer, pilot projects, risk mitigation strategies, and institutional collaboration. Representatives from Baker Hughes, Fervo Energy, Sage Geosystems, ADI Analytics, AlterG Resources, Greater Houston Partnership, and other organizations contributed perspectives on India’s geothermal potential and opportunities for joint engagement.

5.            Participants agreed on the immense potential of geothermal energy and on the need to further engage to identify priority areas for cooperation, including pilot demonstrations, geological data access, research partnerships, and geothermal applications for data centre cooling and industrial energy needs. The Consulate reaffirmed its commitment to facilitating connections between US companies and relevant Indian ministries, state governments, and research institutions.

6.             The roundtable marked an important step toward strengthening India–US clean energy collaboration and advancing practical pathways for geothermal deployment in India.
