What to do after issuance of new passport

OCI cardholders are advised to note the following requirements after obtaining a new passport.

1. OCI Passport Updation

1.1 Mandatory updation of new passport particulars

Whenever an OCI cardholder is issued a new passport, the particulars of the new passport must be updated on the OCI portal within three months from the date of issue of the passport. This requirement applies to all OCI cardholders.

Important- If the updation is sought after the prescribed three-month period, a fee of US$25, plus the applicable Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF) fee of US$3, is payable.

1.2 Additional requirements for OCI cardholders registered on a spouse basis

A foreign spouse of an Indian citizen, or a foreign-origin spouse of an OCI cardholder, must upload the following documents online whenever a new passport is issued:

Copy of the new passport;
Recent photograph;
Declaration confirming the subsistence of the marriage; and
Copy of the Indian passport of the Indian spouse or, as applicable, copies of the passport and OCI card of the OCI cardholder spouse.

1.3 Change of address or occupation

OCI cardholders may also use the online updation facility to report:

Change of address; or
Change of occupation.

1.4 Joining a foreign military or police service

An OCI cardholder who joins a foreign military or police service must renounce the OCI card before the nearest Indian Embassy/Consulate. If the OCI cardholder is in India, the renunciation must be made before the jurisdictional Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO).

1.5 How to apply

Applicants should proceed through the “OCI Miscellaneous Application Process Flow” and select the appropriate passport updation service.

OCI Passport Updation is an online-only service. Documents are not required to be submitted through VFS Global or directly to the Embassy/Consulate.

1.6 Processing jurisdiction

OCI Passport Updation applications are automatically routed to the Indian Mission/Post that originally issued the OCI card, irrespective of the applicant’s present place of residence. For example, if an applicant’s OCI card was originally issued by the Consulate General of India, New York, the Passport Updation application will be processed by the Consulate General of India, New York, even if the applicant now resides within the jurisdiction of another Indian Mission/Post.

2. OCI Personal Particulars Updation

2.1 Introduction of OCI Personal Particulars Updation

With effect from 8 July 2026, printing of physical OCI cards/booklets has been discontinued. Accordingly, OCI cardholders are no longer required to apply for re-issue of a physical OCI card. Instead, they must apply for OCI Personal Particulars Updation in the cases specified below.

2.2 Cases requiring Personal Particulars Updation

OCI Personal Particulars Updation is required in the following cases:

Change of name for any reason, including change of name after marriage;
Change of date of birth or place of birth;
Change of nationality, provided the new nationality is not that of Pakistan or Bangladesh; or
Correction of errors in the existing OCI record, such as errors relating to the name, date of birth or place of birth.

Applicants seeking correction of any particulars must provide appropriate documentary evidence in support of the requested change.

2.3 Submission through VFS Global

The Consulate does not accept OCI Personal Particulars Updation applications directly.

Applicants must complete the online application and submit it, together with the prescribed supporting documents, through VFS Global. VFS Global will verify the application and documents before forwarding the case to the Consulate for processing.
