PRESS RELEASE

The Consulate General of India in Houston celebrated the 12th International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2026 through a series of events organized across different cities in Texas and other areas under its jurisdiction, in close partnership with diaspora organizations, community institutions, yoga groups, temples, and cultural associations. The celebrations reflected the wide appeal of yoga as a timeless practice of wellness, discipline, and harmony, while reaffirming the Consulate’s strong outreach to the Indian diaspora and friends of India across the region.

As part of the month-long observance, the Consulate had earlier organized a curtain-raiser event at NASA in Houston, which generated strong public interest and set the tone for the 2026 IDY celebrations. The NASA program served as a symbolic beginning to the annual observance, bringing together the spirit of yoga, science, wellness, and community engagement in a globally recognized setting. The event helped build momentum for the main celebrations and highlighted yoga’s universal relevance in modern life.

The main IDY event was held on 20 June 2026 in the evening at Midtown Park, Houston, and was also marked by a special celebration at the Texas State Capitol in Austin. These flagship events were organized by the Consulate and drew enthusiastic participation from members of the Indian diaspora, local community leaders, yoga practitioners, and friends of India. They stood as the anchor events of a broader calendar of IDY observances held in multiple cities across the Consulate’s jurisdiction.

A special feature of the Midtown Park event was the recognition of senior yoga practitioners and role models who exemplified the theme of this year’s observance, “Yoga for Healthy Ageing.” Their recognition reflected the message that yoga is a lifelong discipline that supports physical vitality, mental balance, resilience, and dignity in later years. The event also underscored the importance of honoring individuals who continue to inspire the community through their sustained practice and leadership.

The Consulate’s IDY celebrations were further strengthened by the active participation of diaspora organizations and community partners that hosted or supported events across the region. These included programs in Houston, Austin, Sugar Land, The Woodlands, San Antonio, Irving-Dallas, and other localities under the Consulate’s jurisdiction, demonstrating the breadth of outreach and the strong spirit of cooperation within the Indian-American community. A calendar of IDY events held is attached herewith.

The attached calendar also reflects additional IDY events scheduled for 26, 27 and 28 June 2026, which will continue the observance and extend the spirit of yoga to more communities. These concluding programs show the sustained enthusiasm of partner organizations and the growing role of collaborative community outreach in the success of the International Day of Yoga celebrations.

The Consulate General of India in Houston expresses its sincere appreciation to all participating organizations, yoga instructors, volunteers, community leaders, and attendees for contributing to the success of IDY 2026. The celebrations symbolized unity, togetherness, health, and mutual respect, while creating valuable outreach avenues for the Consulate across Texas and neighboring areas.
