The Consulate General of India, Houston, partnered with the Office of Mayor John Whitmire to host a joyous Diwali celebration at Houston City Hall on September 28, 2026, marking the third consecutive year the Festival of Lights has been celebrated at this iconic civic venue.
The event brought together elected officials, members of the Consular Corps, community leaders, and members of the Indian-American community to celebrate the timeless values of Diwali: the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair.
Welcoming the distinguished guests, the Consul General thanked Mayor John Whitmire and the Mayor's Office for their continued support and partnership in recognizing and celebrating one of India's most cherished festivals. The Consul General noted that Houston's embrace of Diwali reflects the city's commitment to diversity, mutual respect, and cultural understanding.
In his remarks, Mayor John Whitmire acknowledged the remarkable contributions of the Indian-American community to the growth and prosperity of Houston. The Mayor noted that the talent, hard work, and cultural diversity of the Indian diaspora have enriched Houston's social fabric and contributed significantly to the city's success as one of the most dynamic and globally connected cities in the United States
The evening featured the traditional lighting of the ceremonial lamp, vibrant cultural performances showcasing India's rich artistic heritage, and festive fellowship among attendees. Guests also enjoyed traditional Diwali sweets and refreshments, adding to the warmth and joy of the occasion.
A special attraction on the sidelines of the celebration was an exhibit showcasing the recently issued U.S. Postal Service (USPS) Diwali Forever Stamp, released on October 21, 2026. Designed by Houston-based artist Ms. Sangita Bhutada, the stamp reflects the universal values of light, hope, and renewal associated with Diwali.
The Consulate General extends its sincere appreciation to all partners, performers, volunteers, and community organizations whose contributions made the celebration a memorable success.
As Diwali is observed around the world, Consulate General of India in Houston conveys its warmest greetings and best wishes to all.
May the light of Diwali illuminate our lives with peace, prosperity, happiness, wisdom, and hope. May this Festival of Lights inspire greater harmony, compassion, and understanding among all communities.
